Email is still how most businesses communicate, and it is also one of the most abused channels for fraud. Attackers routinely forge sender addresses to impersonate companies and trick people into handing over money or information. A set of behind-the-scenes standards exists to stop them: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and BIMI.
Why Plain Email Is Easy to Fake
Email was not built with security in mind. By default, nothing stops someone from sending a message that appears to come from your domain. That is how phishing and business email compromise work. The standards below add the verification that email was missing.
SPF: Who Is Allowed to Send
SPF, or Sender Policy Framework, is a published list of the mail servers authorized to send email for your domain. Receiving servers check it to confirm a message came from an approved source.
DKIM: Proof the Message Was Not Tampered With
DKIM, or DomainKeys Identified Mail, adds a cryptographic signature to your outgoing email. The receiving server uses it to verify that the message really came from your domain and was not altered along the way.
DMARC: The Policy That Ties It Together
DMARC builds on SPF and DKIM. It tells receiving servers what to do with messages that fail those checks, whether to let them through, mark them as spam, or reject them outright. It also sends you reports, so you can see who is sending email in your name.
BIMI: Your Logo in the Inbox
BIMI, or Brand Indicators for Message Identification, is the newest layer. Once your email is properly authenticated with DMARC, BIMI lets your brand logo appear next to your messages in supported inboxes. It is both a trust signal for recipients and a reward for doing the security work.
Why All Four Matter
Each layer does a different job, and they are strongest together. Properly configured, they make it far harder for anyone to impersonate your business, protect your customers from fraud, and improve the odds that your legitimate email reaches the inbox instead of the spam folder.
